• Teaching Tips
  Teachers may want to provide background content on local and global food supply chains before presenting this lesson. Conceptual knowledge of sustainability will be needed. Students may want to work in pairs or small groups to complete the activities. Students may want to bring food items to school if this activity is taking place in a classroom.
• About the Science
  The food we eat has a huge affect on people and the environment. Much of that impact is caused by the processing, packaging and transporting of food around the world. In addition, 1 billion people in the world today are hungry because they do not have the means to produce or buy food. The food sustainability and security material enables pupils to learn about the impact of food on the environment and people. This resource includes activities analyzing lifecycles and looking at carbon footprints. Suggestions: When delivering the course, it is important that the instructors could give students a feeling of what the numbers mean and how large it is. In addition, it is important to inform students the time of the data. It is also important to mention how the pandemic has changed (increased) the number as a case of supply chain disruption. • About the Pedagogy
  Lesson includes a powerpoint with separate worksheet for students to answer questions and complete the activities. Open-ended, student selected, inquiry-based activities are included. Students make decisions, solve problems and compare and contrast differing viewpoints. The activities ask questions about food security and how climate affects food, risks and benefits, and asks students to persuade others about their point of view. A call to action is indicated.
