There is an aspect to this phenomenon that is commonly ignored, and indeed often denied, and that is the role of Solar activity in stimulating the phenomenon. While 'The Jury is Still Out' on this, we do have some interesting coincidences, not least the sudden increase in solar activity over the last few months of 2020 and the apparent reaction of the Thermosphere in response.
